Job Summary:
We are offering a valuable internship opportunity for a motivated and compassionate high school student interested in the field of Food & Nutrition. As an intern, you will have the chance to work alongside our Food & Nutrition mentors, supporting our mission to assist ovarian cancer patients. This internship will provide you with a researching experience in nutrition, exposure to oncology care, and the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of individuals facing ovarian cancer.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Food & Nutrition team / Mentor in developing specialized dietary plans and recommendations tailored to the unique needs of ovarian cancer patients.
- Internists are suggested to identify opportunities by searching reliable sources on the internet and if possible work with hospital nutritionists to collaborate and conduct basic nutritional assessments under supervision.
- Support educational initiatives by researching and preparing materials related to nutrition and ovarian cancer, including fact sheets, handouts, or presentations.
- Help organize and participate in workshops or events aimed at educating patients, caregivers, and the community about the role of nutrition in ovarian cancer care.
- Observe and learn from experienced professionals, such as dietitians or nutritionists, during patient consultations or meetings.
- Participate in discussions and meetings with volunteer mentors, contributing ideas and insights to enhance patient care and support.
- Assist in maintaining accurate records and documentation of patient interactions, ensuring confidentiality and privacy of sensitive information.
- Stay updated with relevant research and literature in the field of nutrition and cancer care, sharing any valuable findings or resources with the team.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled as a high school or college student with an interest in nutrition, health sciences, or a related field.
- Genuine passion for supporting individuals affected by ovarian cancer and an eagerness to learn about the intersection of nutrition and cancer care.
- Familiarity with research methodologies, data analysis techniques, and scientific literature search tools.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey information and actively listen to mentors.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage time effectively.
- Empathetic and compassionate approach when interacting with patients, demonstrating sensitivity and respect for their individual needs and circumstances.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, contributing ideas and embracing a positive and professional attitude.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google Suite applications.
Note: This internship provides a learning opportunity and does not involve providing direct medical treatment or advice to patients. All tasks will be performed under appropriate supervision of a volunteer mentor.
Duration: This is an 8-week internship, starting in June and ending in August 2023.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
